The garments worn by the Polish aristocracy have their origins in the 16th century. Since they were influenced by Poland’s contacts with Turkey, Hungary, and the Cossacks, they have a distinct oriental flavour. In the 17th century, when the traditional costume was gradually supplanted by Western European dress, it became a statement manifesting attachment to traditional, local values. Women’s dress was inspired by the most typical elements of men’s clothes which were adapted to the requirements of female fashion. In her work, Ewa Juszkiewicz analyses the influences and migrations that have an impact on the fashion of the era, showing a fantastic ethnogenesis of Polish men and women.
