Matthaeus Deisch

born 1724, died 1789

Etcher born in Augsburg, student of Rugendas and Kilian. In 1749, he settled permanently in Gdańsk (Danzig). He the used techniques of acquaforte and mezzotint to create portraits, cityscapes and genre scenes, as well as numerous exlibris, visiting cards and other utilitarian prints. He authored more than 200 etchings. In collaboration with the draughtsman Friedrich Anton August Lohrmann, he put together a series of vedutas of Gdańsk titled 50 Prospecte von Danzig (1761-1765), as well as a series depicting the market sellers (known as the Gdańsk Callers) titled Die Danziger Ausrufen (1762-1765). He was also the author of illustrations that became part of the peerage of patrician families in Wappen (1767).
