Nomadic State (Karolina Mełnicka, Stach Szumski)
Nomadic State is an open, mobile project based on the creation of a nomadic micro-state, which would employ mimicry to mesh itself into a given geographical and demographic area. Nomadic State refers to the genesis of “non-places” with regard to spaces bereft of a specific identity due to a globalized streamlining of reality, as well as the dislocated nature of the Internet. Such an understanding prompts a reflection on the position of a human being within the political system of the nation he or she happens to be residing in. Nomadic State was founded in 2015. Its artists have carried out a number of actions in Poland and abroad, their works shown at, i.a., Spielart Festival in Munich, Warsaw’s Project Space at Zachęta and Geological Museum, the Youth Triennial in Orońsk, Galeria HIT in Bratislava, and the Ostrale Biennial in Lipsk. In 2017, the group’s artists put on solo shows based around two of their voyages: Tourrorism all-inclusive, which is a commentary on the demise of Egypt’s tourism industry, presented at the 9/10 Gallery in Poznan, along with their biggest project to date, titled “In Pursuit of the Meaning of Life”, which concluded their trek across the lands of Russia, Korea and Japan, presented at the BWA Studio gallery in Wrocław.
